A snapshot of young South Australians Third edition June 2015

A snapshot of young South Australians June 2015 (PDF 1.1MB) pulls together data across a range of indicators that measure how well children and young people in South Australia (SA) are doing in five domains including; health, safety, enjoyment and achievement, making a positive contribution and preparation for adult life.

This edition points to some areas of significant achievement and improvements including:

  • the proportion of young people who have completed the South Australian Certificate of Education (up from 75% in 2011 to 84.0% in 2013)
  • a decline in the number of children and young people apprehended by police and in the juvenile justice system, that may suggest that efforts to address juvenile offending are paying dividends.

Areas in which SA needs to do more include protecting children and young people from harm, and closing the gap in wellbeing and opportunities for Aboriginal children and young people. The evidence indicates:

  • the rates of substantiated child abuse or neglect remain high, as does the proportion of children and young people where abuse was substantiated (following initial decisions not to substantiate a notification of harm). The stability of placements in out of home care has also decreased significantly since 2009
  • we are still not doing enough to ensure Aboriginal children and young people can thrive and achieve their aspirations. The data show that they are almost 12 times more likely to be on a care and protection order and that the gap in educational achievement remains high.
